The key facts at a glance
A wedding witness signs to attest to the ceremony and thereby the formal step of getting married - even though in Germany this is no longer strictly required for a civil wedding today.
Their duties cover much more: they offer support with the wedding planning, help the couple with creative ideas, coordinate games and contribute emotionally to the celebration.
Whether at the church, at the wedding celebration or in the run-up to the stag or hen party, wedding witnesses stand side by side with the bride & groom at all times.
With a well-thought-out checklist, inspiring ideas and helpful tips, your role as a wedding witness can become a real highlight.
A wedding witness is a person who is present at the ceremony and, through their signature, officially attests to the marriage. For a long time this act was a legal requirement - but since 1998 it is no longer necessary in Germany to name wedding witnesses for a civil wedding.
Nevertheless, wedding witnesses keep an important role at many weddings for the couple, especially at ceremonies in the church, where they still carry significance for church documents and liturgical proceedings.
The term "wedding witness" historically refers to the person who attests to the bond of marriage - today couples associate it above all with trust, closeness and active support throughout this special day.
Who can be chosen as a wedding witness is usually a question of trust:
Usually they are friends, siblings or close people who know the couple well.
Age & identity: In many towns the registry office requires wedding witnesses to be of legal age and able to show ID.
Number: There is no legal maximum. Many couples name one or two wedding witnesses, others several at once; but usually two are enough for the signature.
Division of roles: One witness often supports the bride in particular, while another stands by the groom — but these roles are flexible and can be adapted individually.
The bridesmaids often play a supporting role too: they help both with the preparations and with carrying the bridal bouquet, and take part in surprises or games.
Although the only official duty is the signature, wedding witnesses take on a wide range of responsibilities:
The signature remains the central act that formally confirms the ceremony.
Wedding planning: Help with choosing the venue, service providers and the running order
Stag or hen party: Organisation, planning activities, designing games and ideally creative surprises
Supporting the couple: With choosing the dress or suit, decorations or coordinating with the bridesmaids group
Looking after the guests and being the point of contact for any concerns
Safely keeping and handing over the bridal bouquet
Rings & their symbolic handover
Spontaneous help: adjusting the dress, handing out tissues, managing small emergencies
Shared responsibility for the running order and timing
Taking down & returning rented equipment
Organising and handing out the gifts
Help with sending out thank-you cards and wrapping up the celebration
Here are a few practical suggestions so you can carry out your role with confidence:
Checklist: Plan your to-dos in phases - from the preparations through the day to the follow-up
Gift ideas & wishes: Tailor gifts to the bride & groom and gather their wishes in advance
Witness's speech: Put together a short address with personal anecdotes and good wishes
Games & programme points: Little interludes, quizzes or getting the guests involved create fun
Clarifying roles & communication: Talk to the couple beforehand about your duties, limits and wishes
